New York Department of Education

The New York City Department of Education is a government department that oversees public school system. The DOE oversees a range of certifications and a Pupil Personnel Certificate. These certificates cover a variety of careers in education that have direct contact with students. The Pupil Personnel Certificate is held by professionals who work in a school setting and have direct contact with students. Examples include a school social worker, a school psychologist, a school counselor, an attendance teacher, a nurse, or a school dental hygienist. The NYC DoE certifies all educators in these roles. The certificate is permanent, unless revoked for good cause by the Commissioner of Education.

The Department also supports the implementation of DEI policies, which require that public schools provide instruction that meets the New York State Learning Standards. The DOE has also announced plans to phase in the new Common Core State Standards. By 2014-2015, the state hopes to have all public schools implement the new standards. However, it is important to note that this policy is still in its infancy and will be a long way off. Until then, the city’s education system will remain an unfunded mandate, and the City Department of Education has a lot of work to do.
