Sadly, very few consumers actually read the product ingredients. Over the past seven years, I’ve had a ton of lash clients come to me complaining about itchy eyes, red eyelids, dry eyes, and even one whose doctor told her to use eyedrops indefinitely lest she goes blind. Lash serums were the connecting factor in each of these cases.
I did not like that, as a beauty expert, we were selling these lash serums to our clients without disclosing any possible adverse effects. But how are we to know that a product advertised to us as “safe and effective” is actually causing so many issues? And why are so many people willing to put their health at risk in exchange for thicker lashes? I began my quest to create Lash Nectar after asking myself those questions. I discovered some extremely upsetting information regarding lash serums (and the beauty business in general) at this time, and I was aware that I could have done better. The good news is that there are marketable chemicals that can safely and effectively lengthen your lashes.
Let’s start by getting educated. There are three different types of lash serums: peptide, herbal, and prostaglandin. Formulations can have one, two, or all of these, but for the sake of instruction, I’ll break them up.
Prostaglandin
The bulk of lash serums on the market are prostaglandin-based. Chemical substances called prostaglandins have a similar hormonal impact on the body. They are in charge of indicating inflammation, which explains why so many users have itchy eyes and other negative effects. In 2015, Canada outlawed prostaglandins in cosmetic goods. Because they use non-synthetic prostaglandin, the FDA only regulates one lash serum available in the US. The FDA does not restrict any other prostaglandin-based serums, but they all contain synthetic versions of the substance, which have the same dangers and side effects as their non-synthetic counterparts.
The hazards and side effects of prostaglandins are numerous and include inflammation, skin redness or coloring, change in eye color, decrease in eye pressure, hazy vision, drooping eyelids, burning and stinging, inflammation of the ocular surface, etc. In my personal experience, as my clients’ lashes have grown longer, they have also caused a large number of them to become thinner and weaker. After ceasing the use of a prostaglandin serum, it’s fairly usual to notice your lashes falling out quickly.
This is an attempt by your lashes to resume their regular function because they are so accustomed to receiving hormones from an external source. Additionally, you may suffer from unpleasant side effects, some of which may last a lifetime. In fact, a well-known corporation was recently sued for failing to warn clients about any of these hazards.
Prostaglandins can be found as isopropyl cloprostenol, isopropanol Phenyl-hydroxyl-pentene Dihydroxy-cyclopentyl-heptanoate, Dechloro Dihydroxy Difluoro Ethylcloprostenolamide, or Trifluoromethyl Dechloro Ethylprostenolamide on the components list.
Botanical-based lash serums
To get healthier lashes, utilize botanical serums, which contain ingredients derived from plants. These are typically utilized as a natural alternative to prostaglandin or peptide-based products to generate “healthier lashes” because it is difficult to get the same lengthening outcome from a botanical formulation as you would with other products. Unfortunately, utilizing botanical products increases your risk of experiencing an adverse reaction if you have sensitive skin. Additionally, bear in mind that once opened, botanical remedies last less time than their synthetic counterparts.
Peptide-based lash serums
Peptides are used in lash serums! They’re an excellent substitute for Prostaglandin-based lash serums because they produce results that are very comparable, if not identical, with little to no negative effects. In lash serums, a few typical peptides with varying functions can be discovered. Myristoyl pentapeptide-17, Myristoyl hexapeptide-16, and Capixyl are the three peptides that we employ in our formulation and which I think to be the best and most efficient.
The compounds myristoyl hexapeptide-16 and myristoyl pentapeptide-17:
Strong peptides made specifically for lash growth include Myristoyl pentapeptide-17, a five amino acid peptide, and Myristoyl hexapeptide-16, a six amino acid peptide. They effectively stimulate the genes that make keratin, the structural protein in hair, when administered in conjunction and counteract any loss in keratin synthesis. They have been demonstrated to increase keratin production by up to 160% by increasing the expression of keratin genes. According to one study, after six weeks of use, participants’ eyelash thickness and length improved by 72% while using a lash serum that contained both peptides. Additionally, this study found no unfavorable side effects lobiastore.
Acetyl tetrapeptide-3 and Red Clover Extract are the active ingredients in Capixyl, a new and special active compound that is intended to prevent and stop hair loss while also stimulating hair growth (rich in Biochanin a).
Compared to our head hair, the growth phase of our eyelashes is much shorter. The acetyl tetrapeptide-3, a peptide, holds the lash in place, enabling longer-lasting growth. For better hair anchoring, it also makes the hair follicles bigger. Your lashes will thicken as a result!
Let’s now discuss Red Clover, which, while not a peptide, is an incredible component of this ingredient. High levels of DHT shorten the growth phase of the hair cycle (decreasing the anagen phase (growing) and increasing the telogen phase (resting)), shrink hair follicles, and result in progressively shorter, finer hairs, all of which contribute to hair loss. These hairs eventually stop existing altogether. The isoflavone in Red Clover, biochanin A, is known to be a very potent inhibitor of the enzyme 5-reductase, which transforms testosterone into DHT, hence regulating the quantity of DHT generated.
What to look for in a good lash serum
peptide-containing formulations are excellent for strengthening and promoting the growth of lash hair. Consider peptides essential if you’ve been hard with mascara removal or frequently use waterproof products because they’re wonderful for nourishing fragile, thin lashes.
You’re undoubtedly already aware of biotin supplements, which are excellent for promoting the growth of strong, healthy hair and nails. For your lashes to grow long and strong, experts advise looking for lash growth serums that also have this potent substance.
You should opt for a product that has conditioning agents to keep your lashes silky and avoid breaking in the future if you want to keep them long and healthy. As an alternative, you can buy a separate lash conditioner to support lash health if you prefer a mix that doesn’t include conditioning components.
Best lash serums
Eye care products allow you to take care of the sensitive skin around your eyes. Eyelash serums are a popular part of the skincare routine since they help lashes look thicker and longer. When choosing an eyelash serum, there are several factors to think about. Experts have put together this list to help you decide which brand or product to buy based on your preferences and requirements. The best eyelash serums must be created with natural, organic, chemical-free, and gluten-free components. Being vegan, affordable, and cruelty-free are also essential considerations. One of the most efficient ways to have longer and thicker eyelashes is using eyelash enhancing serum that is affordable, effective and without any side effects because eyes are so sensitive that any chemical ingredients can cause harm to them.
